Business Operations Engineer

Full Time Hybrid @HireWise

Job Description

Our client is a fast-growing multi-product cybersecurity software startup. They make vital cybersecurity products that are easily accessible to organisations of any size. These include organisations such as Wise, TUI, Action for Children, and top global law firms.

We are seeking a curious, rigorous, and driven individual for the role of Business Operations Engineer.

You will be joining a team responsible for building and maintaining our commercial operating system, core to how and where we do business. You will have insight into every aspect of the business with opportunities to develop tools and applications for teams across the business, be it sales, marketing, analytics, finance, or project management.

About you

The following is a list of personal and professional characteristics we feel will be most suited for this role, however, we see this list as descriptive, not prescriptive, so if you feel like enough of the points below apply to you, we want to hear from you! (and please mind your biases: https://hbr.org/2014/08/why-women-dont-apply-for-jobs-unless-theyre-100-qualified)

  • You probably have a Bachelors, or above in a quantitative field like Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering, but if you do not, you are good at coding, enjoy solving problems for the fun of it, and just like an engineer, you appreciate the beauty of a well-designed system. ⚙️
  • Ideally you’d have at least two years’ worth of experience coding some JavaScript or Python, not necessarily as part of a job, but if not, you have a solid understanding of how to write concise code in other languages (SQL 👋🏽), and are curious to expand your skill set. 👩🏽‍💻
  • You enjoy figuring things out for yourself, and you have confidence in your ability to do so even in areas where you do not have direct experience – you know that every problem can be broken down into finite pieces that, in turn, are solvable. 🧪
  • You love getting things right the first time. This means you are attentive to detail and are able to step back and review your own work for accuracy – you find that there is nothing more uncomfortable than someone else spotting a mistake in your work. 🔎
  • You are commercially minded and curious about what makes a business tick – you have probably picked up a copy of The Economist more than once. 📊
  • You communicate well because you understand the power of the written word and well-constructed sentences in making the case to drive the outcomes you believe in – you enjoy reading and probably use proper punctuation even in your text messages. 💬
  • You have a passion for elegant process flows and the mind of a tinkerer – you probably did a lot of Lego when you were younger. 🧱

Does any of the above sound like you? Please read on.

About the role

We are tinkerers working in a small technical function at the centre of the business, tasked with optimise ing and maintaining our commercial operating system. To do so, we work with many tools and technologies, from low-code API handlers like Make, to building JavaScript and Python applications with Retool, to maintaining cloud-based data pipelines and warehouses.

This role will predominantly focus on building operational interfaces using Retool (JS-based), so that people across the business may access and connect to the underlying systems with more ease.

In practical terms, here are some example projects:

  • building applications which streamline access to various internal and external APIs for business users;
  • lead efforts to centralise existing operational tools into a snappy, clear, and effective hub;
  • building efficient prospecting tools for our sales force, combining both our proprietary data and web data streams into a powerful bespoke tool.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. We are looking for someone who thrives at the intersection of business and engineering, pairing code-based solutions with business acumen. This is a role with a lot of flexibility, and where one can expect to get deeply involved with all the business functions to listen and understand what makes the heart of the business tick, and then help it function better.

In doing so, you will be supported by a team of three experienced operations professionals who will count on you for the coding ability and energy you will bring to the table and who you can count on for mentorship, systems, and business guidance.
